I have yet to understand how the double tags are in any way harmful or to hear anyone say that they are. Everything that I've seen so far, including James' comments, seem to indicate that they have no known negative effect. I use double tags occasionally to convey information that is otherwise missing. eg [OT][WOT]:: both goes to the intended recipients and, apparently, is sorted correctly by everyone who sorts it. The extra dummy tag conveys a message that most will understand and that some will appreciate. Similarly, although I probably have given up on this one [EE][TECHO]:: also has a message which some can find useful if they wish to. ie it's NOT about electrical engineering but is on an engineering topic. Some care about such things. And, yes, I know that [a colon | colons] [is | are] optional.
