There are plenty of Linux distros, BSD flavors, and other OS's that will run just fine on old hardware. http://www.distrowatch.com - Start digging. Just don't expect miracles. Major distros aren't targeted at such hardware, just like Vista isn't. The machines are as slow as they were back when you used Windows 3.11 and DOS on them.
