Mandarin is kind of the standard Chinese. It is based on the spoken language of North China. I can understand Hokkien (spoken in Taiwan, South Fujian, Singapore and part of Malaysia) and Cantonese (spoken in Hong Kong, West Guangdong and part of Malaysia) but so-so at speaking them. Many over-sea Chinese are originally from Fujian and GuangDong province so they bring this two dialects to their new host countries. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hokkien http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cantonese_%28linguistics%29 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoken_Chinese Regards, Xiaofan -- http://www.piclist.com PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist
