How do you think Ubuntu works on older hardware? >I've used Red Hat since something like version 6, and have now >gone to Fedora on the servers. Not very well in my experience. I had a 800MHz, 512MB Duron based system doing nothing so tried to load Xubuntu (the 'lite' version for older hardware). Many hours later I gave up, the installer simply would not recognise my SIS based integraged graphics, even if I selected VESA the screen would blank out during installation, and nothing else happened (I waited for an hour at one stage just to make sure but no further progress). I then picked up a another motherboard without integrated graphics and put an old nvida based card in it. Xubuntu then installed with no futher problems. It was however, so slow it was essentialy unusable, it would take a second or two for a menu to pop up after being clikced, after opening an application from the menu, nothing would happen for 3-4 seconds, then I would get the hourglass for what felt like an eternity before anything happened I then installed the previous version just in case, but with the same results. So after a few evenings of messing around with no improvements I scratched it and put XP back on so at least I could use the box. XP is perfectly useable on it, no delays when clicking menu, apps open at a reasonable speed etc. Is Ubuntu simply a massive resource hog, or is it possible that there some kind of hardware incompatibility? If it's possible to run a modern Linux distro on this machine then I would like to have another go if anyone has any suggestions (either a suitable distro or how to make Xubuntu run at usable speed).
