I have the same laptop IIRC and am currently trying to get it going with a minimalistic Linux version. Puppy linux is supposed to work down to about 32Megs of ram or maybe less (with a swap file and once installed) so I might be being a bit optomistic but it's worth a try. "Damn Small Linux" is also a possibility but seems to require slightly more resources - I could be wrong here. I got Puppy Linux working on another more modern laptop and it was real easy to get going - wireless and all. Otherwise I'm glad to hear it runs fine on Win98 as that may be the final option. It's running win95 without problems - but I can't get the wireless PCMCIA card to connect. (I can detect the SSID and measure field strength however). Complains about missing drivers & the origonal win95 version (as fitted) doesn't have any wireless support apparently. Part of the problem is that I only have a CD drive in it - no floppy or USB & it won't boot from the CD so without network access it's a bit difficult to get stuff on and off it. It does read CD-Rs but not re-writeable CDs. I can transfer files by serial port - but it's quite slow. - Haven't managed to get the direct cable connection working so it's via Hyperterminal file transfer at 57600. I'll probably be getting down & dirty with "grub" this weekend & try & add a boot menu of some sort. If I get wireless operating it's destined to become a VNC viewer for my desktop so actual processing requirements should be minimal.
