I had Vector Linux with the IceWM window manager running on a similar
machine a few years ago.  The hard drive might have been as big as 4GB,
but the PC worked as well as you could expect.

You might want to try a few LiveCDs from some of the lighter
distributions before you bite the bullet and install one of them.
