There are a few projects that helped it get there: - udev moving from the static /dev device files to dynamic device node creation. Very cool stuff going on here, ie you get standard device names like /dev/camera rather than /dev/usb0 which change depending on device plugin order. - DBUS and HAL adding lots of easy GUI methods to handle system administration, power management, etc. - Ubuntu gathering a critical mass of developers and users that help test all of the odd configurations. I am definitely thinking of moving from SuSE to Ubuntu for my laptop to get all the new bells and whistles.
