I took it to mean that there is always the possibility of code malfunction, 
that could cause the pins to be left as inputs, instead of outputs as they 
were supposed to be, not so much as an error prone argument.

For this purpose I do like Olins modules, which are set up to make any 
unused pin a digital output, if not configured in any way in the 
configuration file.
