The first half talks about how to create a filter. I have filters set up, one for piclist messages. But Gmail nevertheless sometimes classifies a message that went through the filter and got a label assigned as spam. So this part doesn't work as white-listing. It is also not described as working in the Gmail docs. (FWIW, I had also assumed that if I had a filter set up, the filter caught a message and assigned a label to it, that then Gmail would automatically assume that this message is not spam. But this is obviously not the case. There are pros and contras to this approach.) >> The thing is that piclist@mit.edu is not the From: header. The second part of that page (adding the message sender to your address book) does seem to work (and it is also described as the AFAIK only method of white-listing by Gmail). But it doesn't work with piclist@mit.edu, because that doesn't appear as the message sender. You have to add the individual piclist contributors.
