The Gmail spam filter seems to be pretty good, but it's not easily configurable. For example, I'd like to have an option that says "if a label is applied to a message, automatically consider it as not spam". But it doesn't seem to have anything like this. The thing is that piclist@mit.edu is not the From: header. One workaround could be to add all piclist contributors to your address book. With time, this will avoid piclist messages being marked as spam.
