There's a big difference between having a passive knowledge of the instruction set (i.e. being able to understand the compiler-generated code when needed, possibly with the help of an instruction table :) and having an active knowledge of it (required to actually write code). Then there's what Xiaofan wrote: Olin doesn't program in (pure) assembler, he programs in ASPIC. Which is probably as difficult to learn as C (and for me and many others it would be much more difficult to learn).
