Why is that an abuse? I have done a few 18F projects with the C18
compiler. I know the instruction set a little bit, but I have no desire
to learn it better. What is wrong with that?

That has nothing to do with HLL, everything with use of a library versus
using the peripheral directly (at the register level). In the same 18F
projects I used the library when I felt like it. It allowed me to finish
the project faster. What's wrong with that?
