The virtual PC is free, but the OS is not! Go to http://portableapps.com/ which is a great set of the basics, and has links to all sorts of individual projects as well to portable-ize various apps. Good info on how it's done. There is also a great program called "Total Uninstaller" that does a great job of tracking what registry entries are made and where every file goes when installing or running (takes snapshots and isn't quick, but you run it once). There are files that get installed in the program directory's tree, the common Windows areas, and entries to the registry. Many apps will just recreate the entries if they don't exist, others will barf instead. It is possible to take the common files and put them with the program exe and it will find them by default (you can run it from a single directory) - the only problem being that if an incompatible version is on the host machine AND in use at the time you run it, it won't load yours. I've found very few conflicts 'portable-izing' 3GB worth of apps I use so far though. If the registry is a big problem for MPLAB, then using Total Uninstaller, you would know its entries and could make a small VB app to write the entries at startup and zero them out before ejecting the USB stick. -Skip piclist@mmendes.com wrote: > Should this really be a necessity, Windows Virtual PC is free.
