In a general sense, many people in industry seem to prefer Verilog over VHDL. So, that might be a consideration. However, with these things, I would say that the techniques are more important than the actual language. All the major tools can handle either language well enough. So, it would actually be the techniques that you should concentrate on. I find it fairly useful to approach these problems from a hardware perspective. It is a good idea to know how the hardware looks like before writing any code. Looking at it from the point of view of software is not feasible as these are not software programming languages. Keep in mind that the languages describe hardware.
