For even better results I've seen a normally closed relay contact with a plug to fit a home lighting circuit fuse holder. A fuse can be installed in the plug in unit. I've seen this used with both doorbell and telephone input. When the relay is operated at ringing cadence the lights flash. Better used with incandescent bulbs rather than fluorescents / CFLs :-). Most exciting was when someone inadvertently plugged a TV into the lighting circuit :-). When the phone rang the TV would go berserk. Got their attention. Hard on the TV no doubt.
