Hector, optocouplers would be a good idea. 4-20mA or some
other current loop would do as well, but probably not as cheap
or simple as optos. I think by definition you shouldn't need to
take any special precautions protecting the PIC inputs if you use
an opto. On the LED side you've got a current-limiting R, maybe
a cap and a couple of clamping diodes too ?
