and wattle & daub were most common before then, with the occasional stonework edifice if you were rich enough to build a castle! :-)

Brick walls demonstrate the high-frequency attenuation thing rather well - I can hear low frequency sounds like the thump of something hitting the 
floor from my neighbour's house through the party wall, but speech, non-bass music and so on isn't audible.
