At least I can find more use for the battery welder <G>.  I am thinking 
to spot weld a nickel plate over the torn joints to strengthen the 
joints further.

I forgot to report back on the hobbyist's battery welder.  It was from 
<http://www.hobbyspotwelders.com/> .

A brief check show that the price has gone up quite a bit, and there are 
better models now.

I remembered a distributor found through google had a better pricing, 
and their power supply and charger was overpriced.

Other than that, it has been working quite well for low volume usage here.
