Which probably goes for all media, so it's not really particular to hard disks. The only thing that is not affected by this is a backup over the net (if you have the pipe for your data). And even then, you might lose a whole day if the fire starts while the backup is running. In the end, you need to see where your odds are. Nothing is 100% safe, and how many % is safe enough is everybody's own decision.
