Not necessarily in order of significance:

 - Freq response of human ear.
 - Lo freqs less directional than hi, given typical transducers.
 - Transducers designed for "Bass you can taste", like somebody
    used to advertise (Cerwin-Vega?).
 - Recordings designed to take advantage of all of the above to
   annoy the man.
