There is however a certain something in watching "your" yacht claw its 
way, meter** by metre with only minutes to spare, over several 
minutes, past the treasonous enemy afterguard * and shuffle across the 
line mere metres ahead.

The fact that it was more luck than skill and could have gone either 
way only dulls the edge a little.
