I know several people who are using a combination of CD or DVD and external 
hard drive for backups.  For $100 US you can get an external HD that will 
hold several hundred GB.  Since lightening strikes are fairly common around 
here, the external HD should be stored unplugged from everything, like on a 
shelf in the closet.  Even better would be in a safe deposit box.
