What range is required?
Would IR be acceptable?
eg is there uninterrupted line of sight or nearly so?

IR can be VERY cheap if it meets other specs.

Do you need client-client or only client-master?

Even with client-client, in some cases doing a "master to all slaves" 
and "all slaves to master" system can be effective as per original 
Aloha net.
