It seems to me I remember an old article where a guy wanted to create a bunch of switches for his flight simulator program.  He took an $10 keyboard and just wired pushbutton switches to the contacts.  I though it was a pretty good simple and elegant solution.  Maybe not what you are looking for but it sure is a lot cheaper and you will be up and running in an hour.
