The solder melt, but the wick never > "ate" the solder. There is a hughe difference in quality between wicks. The type sold in hardware stores is IMHO often useless. What I use (and sell) is the "chem-wick", I think it is known under a different name in other countries. I like the smallest version the best because it heats up more quickly. Sometimes it helps to add a drop of solder (the problem is often the heat transfer from wick to the solder joint).
