In order for minorities not to have a miserable existence under a democracy (not specifically race or sexual orientation, just anyone who is in a group for any reason not related to the majority), the majority needs to have compassion for the opinion of the minority and NOT vote to hose them. Example: sports. I hate sports. I'm bored by them and find them to be an anachronism dating back to physical competition for mating rights. I would never, ever vote to fund sports with my money- not by attending events, not by paying for the TV channels that carry them, and not by voting to pass a tax increase to pay for a new stadium. However, I am in a minority. Because of that, my whole life, I have been forced by the sport-loving majority to pay for something I don't care about and never use. This is just an example and probably not a very good one. And no, I don't want to hear about the money sports bring into schools or the poor students who go to college on sporting scholarships or the benefit to the community of a new stadium. To me, those things are just ways for the majority to justify hosing the minority.
