I made my son (5y) a few wooden bricks with 2 or three nails, with a
LED+resistor, diode, battery+safety resistor, switch, etc. He can
connect the brichts with alligator clip wires. 

But IMHO at that age mechanics might be a more lasting interest: lego,
meccano, fisher technic, etc.
