If I recall, the timing is a little off, and I use more than 130uS (usually a mS) in order to allow everything to settle. Most of the time I use a 74HC595 to expand to 8-bit mode. For 3 pins I get 8. I simply dump the 8-bit data first to the 595 than set up all the other stuff, then execute an e-strobe.
