ARM7 based MCU seems to be the replacement for higher end 8-bit MCUs like PIC18F/8051s. That being said, my experience with the TI TMS470 ARM7 MCU is not that positive. It is really very fragile and consume quite some current. It requires dual core 1.8V/3.3V and its I/Os are not 5V tolerant.
