I suspect you can think of google trends as being in "beta", with 
perhaps
some kinks to work out.  The strangeness reported is (IMO) more likely 
to
be an issue with "google trends" than an actual indication of trends,
especially in obscure areas like microcontrollers.

I would generally expect particularly popular targets (especially in 
obscure
areas) to spawn their own special sites; piclist.com, avrfreaks.net, 
etc...
