Am I looking at the same chart as you? When I open the link you posted, I
see the Atmel having the lowest level of the four, and while it seems to
have caught up with Microchip interest levels during 2006, I don't see it
gaining any more.

As Jesse says, I think the trend for the "common man" is towards open
source tools and documented interfaces.
