no....it was something even more stupid. The symbol I used for the PIC in the schematic had the portB reversed....B7 at the top, B0 at the bottom (something to be said for always making your own symbols) so......I just looked at net names and tied B0 and B1 to the programming pins rather than B7 and B6. Once I ran new wires...all was fine. After a few hours sleep, it was a little more obvious.
