Thanks for the replies.  Interesting, the resonator with no caps....is oscillating at its rated frequency but maybe it doesnt have enough drive for the PIC.  I hope thats the issue with not running in debug, pretty sure it is since I had a 40MHz xtal on it, and it seemed to work, just didnt want to run the part at 40Mhz.  So I'll drop a couple caps on and see what happens.
