I just noticed that you can get most of the cool FTDI USB parts from
mouser now, for reasonable prices.  I remember a while ago not being
able to find any retail distributors.  I just happened to look at their
"new suppliers" page.  I just ordered 4 FT232RL (the SO package) and 4
806-KUSBX-BS1N-B Kycon type B connectors.  That and a few resistors gets
you TTL level serial for a total of $4.70!  That's not much more than
MAX3232E + DB9.
