Thanks all - you've convinced me that I'm not missing anything.  It's an 
interesting time.

And this is an interesting situation.  These parts all have 8-week lead 
times, from everyone - no one carries any stock.  Well, Mouser does have 
some, but not enough, and not the specific flavor I want.  So, dealing 
with the distributors seems equivalent to dealing with the manufacturer 
here.
