I don't know what kind of tip he's talking about, but this is a very
specific restriction.

Most "normal" type K thermocouples can withstand 500 degC.

Check out Omega <http://www.omega.com/guides/thermocouples.html>. They're
not the cheapest, but have a lot of info on what's around. Just select 2.
Surface and 3. Type K, and you'll see a lot of options.
