Yeah; not small enough.  The idea to implement a whole IR
remote control, including several-channel PPM decoding and
drivers for a motor and a couple "actuators", all in a package
weighing less than the part you mention, so that you can build
entire remote control airplane things weight less than a gram.
Currently, people sand away most of the package from receivers
like the one you mention, which is a lot more prone to damage
than using an SMT photodiode would be.
