Take a look at the [URL=http://www.parallax.com/detail.asp?product_id=45300]SX48 Proto Board[/URL] and determine if it is a form factor with which you might like to work.  For $10 this is a great way to develop your project.  An SX48 should be able to do all that you have described and probably entirely in BASIC no less!
