I programme in assembly so the C code isn't all that clear to me. I had
similar problems with a 24C01. I was attempting to determine the idle state
by ORing a bunch of flags (can't remember where I got that code from). I
changed to monitoring the SSPIF flag and got it working from there. I don't
if that helps, I didn't see the previous posts.
