Another possibility could be the computer and the 9-pin serial port, although the system hardware management dialogue windows detect no device conflicts.  I sure am off to a very disappointing start.  I tried to program the chip(s) on a breadboard, to no avail.  So the biggest concern for factory defects may be centered on the SX Key.
