Thanks for the comments thus far! In this application, size matters, as
does cost. Adding a bunch of extra parts around a 7805 seems to drive up
cost and board space. I'm looking at the LM2940, which is $0.886 in 1k
quantities. The LM2936 looks similar, but is 50mA instead of 1A and,
according to http://www.findchips.com, looks a bit more expensive.
