The "official" unit for energy in Europe should be watts (kilowatts). That said, for cars bhp (brake horse power) is still used predominantly (at least in my limited experience). Note that the hp figures in NA differ from those in Europe since North America measures horse power at the flywheel: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horsepower The confusing bit for me is while the imperial measurement is used for power on cars, for torque they use the metric measure Newton-meters. In North America we still use foot-pounds. So while I can compare cars in Europe on a HP basis, I have no "feel" for the torque numbers they spec over there.
