Look into 2 parts together -- ST Micro's RBO40 (Mouser has them) as a protection device with any regulator of your choice. For low current stuff (~150mA), I use regular (linear) 7805's. For 1Amp+, I use the LM2670 switching regulators from National. I've had excellent results so far with hundreds of these in use. -Neil.
