If I'm going to fiddle with microcontrollers, electronics, embedded software, and even software development, I'm not sure I need a "nerdy" desktop computer. I've bought five dells in the last few years (most "low end specials" as documented by http://www.dealnews.com; no trouble finding them...), and been happy with all of them. Most have been upgraded with additional memory, some with additional disk, one with better (somewhat hard to find) PCI video cards (since AGP connector was not included on that low-end system), and I've occasionally added a DVD. They were all cheap enough to not worry about upgrading after two years or so passed, and I've been generally pleased with them. Frankly, that's pretty much all I want from a PC... (of course, my other systems are Macs, and the upgradability and maintainability of Macs makes Dells look good even if all the bad things said about them are true!)
