The main reason I recommend people just hunker down and buy the ICD2 is demonstrated by your question: you just don't worry about it. The ICD2 pretty much supports every PIC that comes out from MCHIP. It's so relaxing to not have to check if the programmer I have on hand supports the chip I want to use. I remember the days when I'd see a nice part from MCHIP, check the "supported PIC" lists, and be so dissapointed that the part I wanted to use wasn't supported. Since getting the ICD2 I haven't once checked "the list". Now, with all that said, I do recommend that people have at least one other programmer on hand. There are times where I've had a programming problem, and the quickest way to eliminate the ICD2 as the problem is to try a different programmer. This has saved me quite a bit of time (in every case the ICD2 wasn't the problem, but it was nice to be able to quickly remove it from my list of suspects).
