Resistors are easier to spot, as they are a ceramic bar (always white AFAIK) 
with resist coating on the top side. Then the value is almost always screen 
printed on the top of the resist. Occasionally there is a laser trim notch 
in the side of the resist. If this is present then it may well be a <1% 
tolerance, although in my experience <1% are generally done as a mini-melf 
type, which is a glass tube with coloured bands indicating value.
