Ok, start simple. Probe your thumb. That will give you a nice 60 hz (or 50) signal. Adjust the vertical amplitude, you'll probably end up with a blur that covers half the screen vertically, and hopefully all of it horizontally. Now adjust trigger and timebase till you get a raggedy looking sine wave that's still on the screen. 10mS or thereabouts, and trigger set to auto or normal, and you may have other trigger options. You can always cheat and put the trigger on "line" which will sync it to the power line.
