ooh, I know this one :)

how about re-using a braille terminal. the touchpins of the 
character "display" pop up through the holes (or not in the case of a non-
hole), and a led/opto sensor scanning across the top of the paper tape 
registers whether a pin is "up" or "down".

Bizarre enough for the list?
