Something ain't right here.  And yes, I said "ain't".  :-)
Some LED datasheets specify both continuous and absolute max ratings -- are 
you sure that's not an absolute max value?  Perhaps the mfgr got it wrong on 
the datasheet...(very possible).  The absolute max would be for a very very 
short time (milliseconds or thereabouts).
