Here is a YouTube.com video I made showing how it works correctly IF the LCD is connected. In this case I have a yellow wire coming off of an RA line to the RX connector on the Serial LCD. You will also see that the LCD is off because it only has the RA line and Ground (black wire) going to the serial LCD.
